Summer 2009 sees Maybeshewill release ‘Sing The Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony’, less than 12 months after their debut LP ‘Not For Want Of Trying’ hit the shelves.

The band have once again eschewed the ‘industry’ route whilst making this record – Shunning studios in favour of a DIY approach to recording, mixing and mastering the material in their rehearsal space on a budget of literally nothing. Taking this ethos even further, the band choose to book their own shows and run their own Press and PR company (Robot Needs Home) rather than employ anyone else to do these jobs for them.

‘Sing The Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony’ once again takes the wide-screen expanses and beauty of Post-Rock and combines it with the immediacy and brutality of hardcore. This is an intentionally ‘accessible’ instrumental record – The climaxes and breakdowns condensed into a concise thirty minutes of noise.

It’s difficult for an instrumental band to make a serious social statement without the use of lyrics, but ‘Sing The Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony’ is just that. Set against the background of the current recession, and born out of six months of touring their debut LP, this album is a journal of four twenty-something’s thoughts and experiences during tough times.

Maybeshewill are on tour throughout May with ‘And So I Watch You From Afar’ (Smalltown America) with the album released on Monday 1st June through Field Records in the UK and in July through Xtal in Japan.

The Kinison - What Are You Listneing To?

Permeated with crunching guitars this album by now defunct The Kinison is an intense journey into the then emerging punk/hardcore seen of 2004. What stands out about this album is the cathartic rhythm section which just begs you to get up in your room, out of your chair and dance till your legs fall off. It's fun hardcore that makes you wanna groove - and who would pass that up?

Maybeshewill - Not For Want of Trying

I downloaded this because i thought the cover was amazingly beautiful - i dunno, theres just something about naked red heads that makes me take a second look - jks - what i found however was a nice suprise in this album by UK's Maybeshewill.

They play some instrumental math-rock for the most part of the album, however some tracks do have slight vocals and/or sound recordings from around the place. Highlights include the dreamy and playful I'm in Awe Amadeus! which includes a rolling piano line and frollicking drums - makes me feel like im surrounded by clouds and unicorns for some reason. There is also an aggressive tone to many of the songs and The Paris Hilton Sex Tape showcases this to perfection.

Maybeshewill can also slow things down abit - seen on the drum machine driven Heartflusters. The album's most epic track He Films the Clouds Part 2 is however something else - a journey that makes it's way slowly to a powerful climax and absolute beauty. It is certainly a feat when an artist can convey such emotion without the help of a vocalist to drive power.

The Fall of Troy - Phantom on the Horizon

Mmmmmm yeah, the hardcore kid in me has awaken after years of hiding in the shadows. This is a fun time for me because I don't like to indulge in too much hardcore/post-whatever punk music these days. But this release has been begging to be listneed to for a good four long years. The Fall of Troy first recorded the Ghosthip Demos in 2004 and those songs had become somewhat of an anomoly ever since - never surfacing in a 'proper' release...until now.

Phantom on the Horizon is essentially a re-recording of the four original Ghostship demos along with Ghostship Part III - which from memory was never recorded. However, the songs have been injectedc new life and although very similar, pack a massive punch to the face. The songs seamlessly intertwine together to form the saga - which to be honest i dont care much for, it's the music in this neat little package that really fucks you up.

Chapter One plugs it's way in with a slow burning bass line that culminates into a massively heavy and daunting riff backed by what only can be described as strings mixed with vocals mixed with ghosts and ghouls not of this world. It is a scary affair this ghsotship but a trip that will leave you wanting more. Erak's vocals while containing less screaming than the demo versions are neither boring nor inflated. He uses his voice well, which is to be debated by many hardcore TFOT followers but it is welcoming and fresh and his high pitch can lift a song from 9/10 to a clear 10.

My personal favourite - Ghostship IV is a face melter - witht he most incredible solo that kicks the song off to growls, screams, thick heavy bass, pludering drums and intense guitar work that must be seen to be believed. Clocking in at 37 minutes and 7 seconds this EP is one not to be missed, and will leave you wanting more and more.
