Summer 2009 sees Maybeshewill release ‘Sing The Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony’, less than 12 months after their debut LP ‘Not For Want Of Trying’ hit the shelves.

The band have once again eschewed the ‘industry’ route whilst making this record – Shunning studios in favour of a DIY approach to recording, mixing and mastering the material in their rehearsal space on a budget of literally nothing. Taking this ethos even further, the band choose to book their own shows and run their own Press and PR company (Robot Needs Home) rather than employ anyone else to do these jobs for them.

‘Sing The Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony’ once again takes the wide-screen expanses and beauty of Post-Rock and combines it with the immediacy and brutality of hardcore. This is an intentionally ‘accessible’ instrumental record – The climaxes and breakdowns condensed into a concise thirty minutes of noise.

It’s difficult for an instrumental band to make a serious social statement without the use of lyrics, but ‘Sing The Word Hope In Four-Part Harmony’ is just that. Set against the background of the current recession, and born out of six months of touring their debut LP, this album is a journal of four twenty-something’s thoughts and experiences during tough times.

Maybeshewill are on tour throughout May with ‘And So I Watch You From Afar’ (Smalltown America) with the album released on Monday 1st June through Field Records in the UK and in July through Xtal in Japan.

Mokyow - Variations For Spiegel

I hope whoever read my blog for the past month enjoyed the featured Japanese artists and groups - i have one final offering for you to complete the month of February (even though it is now March...).

Mokyow are from Tokyo and create an atmospheric styled post-rock akin to the likes of Sigur Ros - although i'd perceive it as alot less orchestral and much more organic. The prominent use of piano throughout the record showcases the subtle beauty of tracks while aggressive layered guitars add a cathartic and chaotic bliss to the climaxes of songs. Definately worth checking out.

World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland

Maeda's work has a certain clutterdness that would put most people off even considering listneing to him. However, it is his frenetic and clumsy nature that brings out the true orignality of his work. His previous effort The Lie Lay Land to me was too hectic and all over the place - even for WEG, however i have come to this album and am stumped at it's beauty.

Maeda weaves strings with electronics to create a cacophonic and sparse aura of sound that come together and meet halfway between electronica and rock - kind of that space between one cliff and another - you know you will fall into the cravass - it's just what comes ot mind when it actually happens. This is what i feel with this music, it's confusing yet grabs you instantly by the balls and says you will enjoy this, no matter what. I don't know if you understand...but it's good stuff.

What i really liked about this record was the prominent use of the saxophone - it is such a versatile and emotional instrument and paired with sombre strings that Maeda uses to the enth degree is just mesmerising.

Mono - Walking Clouds and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined

I'm not a Mono expert and this is the only album i have been exposed to, but damn is this thing beautiful. For a long time iv'e held off from listneing to any Mono material, and i don't know why. I was hesitant to delve into the Japanese Post-rock four piece because i thought they wouldn't really move me in anyway. I was wrong, i'll admit it right here.

The music itself is achingly beautiful - it takes it's time, but doesn't meander around for too long. I find automatic comparisons to Mogwai in the louder tracks - however they differ in that the use of strings invokes such vivid imagery during the album that makes it intensly mystifying. This album is a post-rock enthusiasts dream, especially of the GY!BE ilk - but there is plenty to be enjoyed by any music fan.

The Evpatoria Report - Maar

The Evpatoria Report is one of many many many post-rock outfits flooding the scene lately, which to be honest i don't mind because there is plenty of quality music for me to sink my teeth into. The Evpatoria Report show tinges of Explosions in the Sky prowess but also add flare with some jazzy keys, lax drumming and dreamy soundscapes that have a more laid back feel to them.

What i most enjoy about this album though is the bass, it really holds the tracks together especially with the sparce percussion and dreamy keys spinning out of control. The Guitars resemble that of EitS while crescendos and climaxes are of the GY!BE ilk. Another dynamic instrument added to the mix is a violin which really adds that speical layer of beauty that a lot of post-rock uses today.

Although comparisons can be drawn to GY!BE the songs themselves proabaly don't rely too much on heart tugging, tear jerking emotion, rather The Evpatoria Report opt for a more relaxed, dreamy and ethereal soundscape to push their art. Definately one of my top albums for 2008, time to check out their EP....

Godspeed You! Black Emporer - F#A# Infinity

Only when i came back to this album around 6 months after purchase did i really sink my teeth into it properly. And i am glad that i persisted with it. Ominous and harrowing soundscapes build into an apocolyptic sonic attack. The first track is probably the scariest of the three involving a found sound recording of a man narrating what seems to be the end of the world - and oh my does the music reflect this brilliantly.

Each song consists of a few sections that either build up to a climactic peak or wither away with drones and repititive soundlogs. No matter which way it goes GY!BE tend to take you from serene beauty and horrific darkeness. This is a must have.
